website visited…..

http://www.thisfashion.com.sg

questions to be answered are as follows…….

one : how do you find this site?(in 3 words)

1.simple

2.unattractive

3.”Alien” (refrence of word from http://www.studiojmc.com/design-blog/50-common-web-mistakes.html)

two : who do you think this site is created for?

I think this site is created for the “This Fashion” shoppers to enquire more about the This Fashion policies and their ‘out-of-store’ services, for instance, other outlets in which you can visit. I think this site was probably a rushed out work or either it was done because most of the other fashion shops had their own webpage and that ThisFashion also wanted to give their shop a very own website of their own,it make people think if this was a website created for ‘the sake of creating’ a website.

three : what are the good attributes of the site?(in terms of usability, aesthetic issues, etc)?

The good attributes of the site are, in terms of usuability, it has good navigation, easy access to what the users need or want to look for. It’s content is legible and easily navigated through. It is well-organised and neat to begin with.It allows people to have easy reading, scrolling from left to right,up to down. The pictures are also clear, taking little time to load, decreasing page loading time, which is good.

four : what are the bad attributes of the site?

The bad attributes of the site is that it does not have a site map in which allows users to navigate if they’re ever lost on the site itself.
Moreover,it doesn’t have much interactivity in which makes it memorable,it does not keep people staying on it’s site for more than a small amount of 10 to 15mins,it is not very appealing hence prevents one from revisiting the website again. It looks like any other website in which advertises for their stores,it is a website for ThisFashion, the impression of a “ThisFashion” is not there,if one had not been to any ThisFashion outlets,he or she would hardly know what does the shop sell,or rather maybe, that it only sells women’s clothes as displayed in the outlets link.

It makes it hard to be credible, decreasing it’s creditbility. If you notice, the links to ‘This Card’ and ‘Gift Voucher’ are being navigated, the ‘Contact Us’ link disappears, however it reappears if one click on the ‘Home’, ‘Services’ and the ‘Outlets’ link,I’m not sure if there’s something wrong with my browser or something similar.

After viewing this webpage, one could only guess that they sell lingerie, cosmetics and perfumes. They should at least post some pictures in which gives customers or shoppers more detail to the types of clothes that they are selling, probably some images of their ‘most bought’ or ‘new arrivals’.

analyzing…..

waa, thank God this week not a lot of questions to answer….

here’s the PDF files…users and site_obj

question one : What is Browser-Safe Color Palette / Web-Safe Colors?

Browser-Safe Color Palette is the actual palette that Mosaic, Netscape and Internet Explorer use within their browsers. These browsers that uses these palettes differ on Macs and PCs. This palette is based on math, not on how it looks. It was Netscape, Mosaic, and Internet Explorer that picked these colours.

The Browser-Safe Color Palette contains only 216 colors out of 256. The remaining 40 colors vary on Macs and PCs. By eliminating the 40 variable colors, this palette is optimized for cross-platform use.
It should not be used to remap color photographs. However,it is better to use an adaptive palette(with no dithering), leaving the end-browser to do any additional dithering.

to note : dithering is the process of representing intermediate colors by patterns of  tiny colored dots that stimulate the desired color.

The Browser-Safe Palette is useful for  flat-color illustrations, logos with flat-color and in areas in images that has a lot of single color.A Browser that dithers flat colors will make it look more objectionable compared to when  it dithers photographs.

Hence, this palette was calculated by maths, not by visuals.

question two : Is it still relevant in today’s context? Why?

I personally feel that it is not as relevant as it is today, due to the advancing of all the modern computer systems. These made the need for the Browser-Safe Color Palette downgrade to a mere shadow of it’s former glory.

However,i feel that there is no harm in using the Browser-Safe Palette in today’s context, as it is important for page backgrounds, computer graphics, web development applications and multimedia content. Whlist designing a webpage, one could use over 16 million colors for backgrounds, fonts and tables. But, not all of these colors can be displayed correctly on computer screens that does not have the latest graphic cards. Amazingly, many users are still having graphic cards which can display 256 colors only. This makes it difficult for the user to view the page elements specified in 24-bit TrueColor. In such cases, the colors are dithered by web browsers for stimulating more colors, resulting in unpleasant effects. Hence, it is a built in to many computer programs like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Illustrator, Freehand, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, GoLive, and many other professional Web design and development tool, making it fairly easy to use.
Therefore, many web designing experts, designers and developers still feel that it’s a badge of Web design honor to be able to work with the Browser-Safe Palette.

question three : What are the common fonts face found on PC & Mac?

the common fonts are :
Arial
Arial Black
Comic Sans MS
Courier New
Georgia
Impact
Lucida Console
Lucida Sans Unicode
Palatino Linotype
Tahoma
Times New Roman
Trebuchet MS
Verdana
Symbol
Webdings
Wingdings
MS Sans Serif
MS Serif

question four : What is page loading time and how it influence your design?

Page loading time is the output time a page takes to load. It affects one’s website design as no matter how nice your website or webpage looks like,it is unlikely to keep visitors on it’s site if it takes a lot of time to load. However, one could try adding fewer images and graphics to the website, reducing the image file size, dimension or resolution, predefining the size  of the image, using JPG files instead of GIF files. Whilst designing the webpage,i would consider these factors so as not to drain the attention spent of the viewer on my particular webpage.

question five : (http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2007/03/19/web-design-and-worflow-process-comparison) after reading this, write what you think about it.

After reading this article,I have learnt that designing a webpage is not as easy as creating a portfolio. It involves a lot of beforehand planning and steps to take in order to achieve it. It is not like today, you say you want to have a website, and there you have it,the next day,it’s on the internet. One needs to know what is the basic requirements of a website, not just any other page you see on the internet, don’t just create a website because you think it’s cool or just because everyone is having it. I feel that one has to also consider a lot of other factors like how it would attract others to stay and read on, like what is the web designer’s targeted audience’s age, etc..

I find this article useful as it helps me make sure that I fulfil all the steps during the creation of a new website, such as thumbnail sketching, composition, analyzing, and exploration. I think it would help me a lot in this module as I explore the world of web design and make my website more interesting.

In conclusion, creating a webpage is like a process and a cycle that one must follow in order to achieve a good and sustainable website, one that allows it’s viewers to keep going back to read what it has ‘in-store’ for them, I personally found this quite useful from the article, it’s to know what you’re doing. Without knowing what you’re doing, it is no different from a robot, being programmed to do everything.

one : name as many browsers as you can..

Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera

two : What is browser wars?

browser wars are competitions that has happened and are happening due to dominance in the web browser’s marketplace. It represented two time periods : the trial between market-dominating Netscape Navigator and its eventual defeat by Microsoft Internet Explorer in the  late 1990s, and the trial from 2003 onwards between the dominating Internet Explorer and emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and since mid-2008, Google Chrome.

three : What is IP address?

IP addres stands for an Internet Protocol (IP) address, a numerical  32-bit  number sequence which acts as a identifier for an Internet server. It indicates how a server gets to the particular website, which also helps one to track another server. An example of a IP address is 192.135.174.1, the numbers in the first group, the numbers are between 1 and 255, the others are made up of numbers between 0 and 255. However, the IP address varies over different servers.

four : What is a URL?

A URL is a Uniform Resource Identifier,a protocol for helping people to identify addresses on the internet. It is usually separated by dots, and slashes for the different file paths.

five : What is a good website?

A good website allows readers to have easy access to, proper legibility, readable, browser friendly and has a clean language. Furthermore, it has to allow one to download things safely, have lesser downloading time, without the hassle to leave one’s computer on to download something. A good website lets it’s viewers read and extract it’s information at ease.
